Statement: Republicans Put Party Over Students By Confirming DeVos

Republicans pushed through the most unqualified nominee for Education Secretary in this nation’s history

WASHINGTON – High School Democrats of America (HSDA) National Communications Director Andrew Peng and Press Director Joshua Dantzler released the following statement after the Senate voted Wednesday to confirm Betsy DeVos as the new Secretary of Education:

“Today, Senate Republicans shamefully pushed through the most unqualified nominee for Education Secretary in this nation’s history. Despite Betsy DeVos’ staunch support for unregulated, for-profit charter schools, her dangerous lack of knowledge about the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and her disturbing absence of experience with public schools, senators somehow found it in them to put party loyalty over country. They will pay dearly.”

The High School Democrats of America (HSDA), a leading progressive student group with more than 500 chapters in nearly every state, encouraged its 7,500+ members to flood Senators with phone calls voicing opposition to Betsy DeVos earlier this week. The organization also highlighted DeVos’s controversial history on social media with a series of informational graphics and released a list of seven reasons to oppose her confirmation.
