WASHINGTON – High School Democrats of America (HSDA) National Communications Director Andrew Peng released the following statement on behalf of the organization’s 7,500+ members after the Department of Education rescinded the Obama administration’s 2016 Title IX guidance clarifying the rights of transgender students.
“Tonight, the Trump administration, led by Jeff Sessions and Betsy DeVos, launched an all-out assault on the protections of transgender students. By rescinding the federal guidance from the Departments of Justice and Education, they send a dangerous message that could endanger the well-being of our nation’s most vulnerable children, who already experience high rates of bullying, harassment and discrimination.”
“Civil rights are not a ‘states rights’ issue, and Secretary DeVos’ actions speak louder than any claims that she is committed to protecting LGBTQ students. We will continue to stand with our transgender siblings and will fight to ensure that they are safe in our schools and our communities.”
