Why No Republican Can Defeat Biden in November

Article by Blake Noe, TPT Staff Writer

As the nation gets closer to the 2024 election, much of the campaigning and voting to determine who will win the presidency in November. It seems that every week, there is an interview and/or town hall on TV with one or even all of the candidates. And from this point on, primary elections are now taking place, beginning with the Iowa Caucus on January 15.

According to USA.gov, “Caucuses are meetings run by political parties that are held at the county, district, or precinct level” (USA.gov). There were 160 meeting spots in Iowa, and each location opened at 7pm CT (8PM ET), according to The Wall Street Journal (McCormick). Within 30 minutes, at 8:31 pm ET, the Associated Press called the caucus for Donald Trump. The Associated Press said it called Trump the winner because “initial results from eight counties showed Trump with far more than half of the total votes, counted as of 8:31 pm ET, significantly ahead of the rest of the field” (Peoples, Beaumont, Fingernut). The AP also based their decision to call the race early on a poll of people who planned to vote. This just proves the grip Donald Trump has on the Republican party, the fact that an election can be called for him 30 minutes after the polls first opened. There was also criticism at the decision to call the race early because many people had not casted their vote yet, according to The Washington Post. Trump went on to officially win the race, with him receiving 56,260 votes, while Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley receiving 23,420 and 21,085 votes respectively, according to NBC News. After his second place finish in Iowa, DeSantis announced that he was ending his campaign for president on 1/21, just days before the New Hampshire primary (McDuffie/Demissie). Trump went on to win the New Hampshire primary. All of these races lead up to Super Tuesday on March 5, when 16 states and territories will be holding their primary contests, and the most amount of delegates will be up for grabs.

The results from all of the Republican primaries thus far just prove the grip that Trump holds on the Republican Party. It is clear: no other candidate can beat him. No candidate may be able to beat Trump, except one: Biden. According to a Quinnipiac University poll, Biden holds a small lead over Trump, with 49% of registered voters saying they support Biden. However, some national polls do have Biden down, indicating that this is an extremely close race.

If I were old enough to vote, I would vote for Joe Biden because if we were to elect Trump for another four years, we would probably lose our democracy and the decision-making power we have as voters. President Biden has done great things for this country in the 4 years he has been in office. From lowering drug prices to developing infrastructure projects to rallying support for Ukraine and working with Republicans in Congress to pass meaningful legislation, Biden has done a great job and I believe he would continue that if re-elected for another term.
