The Future of Democrats in Tennessee: Who are the young people running and getting elected?

On March 27, 2023, the Nashville community mourned after the mass shooting at The Covenant School, a Presbyterian Church in the Green Hills neighborhood. 28-year-old Aiden Hale, a former student of the school, killed three nine‑year‑old children and three adults before being shot and killed by two Metropolitan Nashville Police officers. In the immediate aftermath of this tragedy, young people from across the state took to the streets to demand gun safety legislation be passed. Amid these demonstrations, what we now know as ‘The Tennessee Three’ forced the Tennessee House into a standstill. Reps Justin J Pearson, Gloria Johnson, and Justin Jones took control of the well and stood with protestors to pressure their colleagues to pass substantial gun safety legislation. Over a couple of months, Reps Pearson and Jones got expelled from the House and eventually reelected in a special election. These events led to the national media eying out the Tennessee legislature. 'The Tennessee Three' aside, who are the key people and rising stars within the Tennessee Democratic Party?

How the Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse Represents Greater US Political Divisions

On Tuesday, March 26th at around 1:30 AM, a massive cargo ship lost power and crashed into one of the piers holding up the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The bridge split almost instantly, with the two ends remaining sprawled across the cargo ship for days after. At least eight construction workers had been on the bridge repairing potholes during the crash, six of whom were presumed dead by Wednesday night. The Key Bridge crosses the Baltimore Harbor Port, a port critical to the shipping of auto parts and hazardous materials in the US. Tens of thousands of people cross the bridge each day, and they are now using tunnels beneath the harbor to reach their destinations. Because of its role in the auto parts industry and in transporting hazardous waste, along with being the gateway to one of the United States’ key trading ports, the collapse of the FSK Bridge is likely to have a major impact on the US economy. An event as major as the bridge collapse should serve to unite the opposing political sides leading up to the 2024 elections. Instead, it represents further division, as illegal immigration, foreign interference in technology and trade, and criticism of diverse infrastructure have all been brought into what is now a harrowing event.

Far-Right Extremists Gaining Momentum in Upstate New York

In the last few years, right-wing extremists have recruited more and distributed more propaganda posters in Upstate New York. Cynthia Miller-Idriss, director of the Polarization & Extremism Research & Innovation Lab, said there’s been an increase in harassment and violence by extremists. In the North Country Region, local, state, and even federal positions are being occupied by more Republicans. These extremists have called for their supporters to “get involved” with the militia movement.
The Constitutional Sheriffs are a movement which teaches sheriffs not to observe laws which they themselves deem as “unconstitutional” . They claim that local police should make the final decision in enacting laws, not the federal government. Critics say this interpretation has “no grounding in any legitimate reading of constitutional history.”

The Parents' Rights Movement: A Divisive Issue in Montgomery County

The Parents' Rights Movement is nothing short of a game-changer in today's social and political landscape. It's a rallying cry for asserting parental authority in the face of what many see as encroachments on traditional family values. Born out of concerns about government overreach, especially in matters concerning education, the movement has become a hot topic in the United States. It's sparked heated debates on issues like sex education, LGBTQ+ rights, and the role of the state in shaping children's upbringing. One of the greatest curiosities of the movement has been the temporary ceasefire it has created, where religious factions, who might normally be at odds, are banding together to safeguard parental rights. The parents' rights movement has emerged as a decisive force even in relatively moderate states like Virginia, where it played a pivotal role in Glenn Youngkin's surprising victory over the liberal former governor Terry McAuliffe. Even in areas known for their liberal leanings, such as Montgomery County, this movement has sparked significant divisions, underscoring its far-reaching impact across the political spectrum.
